“Boderless Education has arrived!. Communication is the door we need to open to succeed!”
On March 2010 Radio Voces Latinas 1610 AM opened their doors to a new initiative from SSEN and the Ministry of Correctional Services. Thus, SSEN Youth Expressions Radio Talk Show was born.
A group of young students from both boards of education, Catholic and Public host a weekly Radio program. They are responsible for researching and presenting their own ideas and collaborate with each other to make the weekly radio program a success.
“.
As a team, they have established their own objectives:
- Suport our youth academic success
- Personal growth
- Help the Latin Youth of our community by mentoring and sharing information that will educate youth and parents
- Have the community integrate with SSEN Youth Expressions via social events
- Promote Saturday tutorial
- Promote in the radio an educational component
Team structure:
- Coordinator: Cristian
- Critic: Kyro, who maintains group best interests
- Ideas/Creativity lead: David
- Implementer: Monica
- External Contact: Eva, social and outgoing
- Inspector: Yanet, is well organized and likes to have things done right
- Team Builder: Krystyn
Since the begining, they were passionate and very involved with topics that currently affects our schools and our kids. Some of these are:
- Abuse,
- Descrimination,
- Lack of trust between parents and kids,
- The ecuation of Trust,
- Is bullying a crime?,
- Our latino culture,
- Tribute to mother’s day,
- The use of alcohol and drugs and their consequences,
- Worldcup 2010,
- Poverty,
- G8 and G20 discussion,
- Youth dating and the summertime
Youth Expressions crew were trained by Radio Voces Latinas professionals. Team members also learned about CRTC rules and regulations so they can be allowed to sit and be in front of the mic during the Talk Show.
A few of the member of the SSEN youth Expressions have dicovered already what they want to do with their future. They are strongly considering to follow their passion and become Scientists, sports broadcaster, politicians, teachers. SSEN’s youth program has helped them to broaden their view.
The young crew have learned to work as a team. Nationalities or genders are not part of the SSEN youth expressions culture.
Many kids don’t like to have their parent around when they are engaged in fun activites.
With our program, parents come along to the set of Voces Latinas to support their kids. We want parents to get involved with their children, we want to enhance their communication skills by letting them share their success with their love ones!. Parents also have a good oportunity to socialize among themselves and share personal experiences and ideas.
We are very happy with the outcome from this wonderfull program, we have proved that kids can socialize with their parents, provided that they are engaged in a fun learning environment and where they are respected for who they truly are. We also have motivated our students to find a reason to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Team members need to start and develop their own research, they need to have clear ideas of what they want to say and how they are going to deliver them to their audience when they are on the air.
On June 28 they were invited by the Minister of Citizenship and Imigration, The Honourable Jason Kenney, to attend the ceremony for the Paul Yuzyk Award representing SSEN youth Expressions for the first time.
Please contact SSEN by email at contactus@ssen.ca if you would like to volunteer or contribute to the program.
You can tune in to listen to SSEN Youth Expressions live broadcasting every Sunday from 7:00pm to 8:00 pm in Radio Voces Latinas 1610 AM.
Audience can call in to participate with the topic at discussion by calling 416-785-0680.

Our New Bilingual Website
The Spanish Speaking Education Network’s primary purpose is to work together towards the academic success of our youth. With that in mind, one of [our objectives](/about) is to insure that both parents and students are fully informed about the education system, and the programs and services available to support them.
We are very pleased to announce that the Spanish Speaking Education Network now offers a newly redesigned, bilingual website, to insure that parents and students are fully informed, with the support of educators, volunteers, community leaders, and others. Our organization must be accessible to all these members, [in English](/) or [in Spanish](/es/), and maintaining a bilingual website is essential to this effort.
